Stretford Grammar School’s Psychology and Sociology Department is a successful and highly experienced team. We offer both subjects at AS and A2 levels, following the AQA specifications (Specification A in Psychology)
In 2013 we had 100% pass rate at A Level in both Psychology and Sociology, with 31% of Psychology students gaining A*/A and 78% of Sociology students gaining A*/B.
Who are we?
Miss C. Graham Head of Psychology and Sociology
Miss R. Lees Teacher of Psychology
Mrs N. Labrey Teacher of Sociology
What will you be taught?
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behaviour. It focuses on the individual and each of the AQA topics reflects this.
Psychology introduces students to Memory, Attachment, Research Methods, Stress, Individual Differences and Social Influence at AS; Aggression, Eating Behaviour, Biological Rhythms and sleep, Depression and Addictive Behaviour at A2.
Sociology is the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society. It focuses on human social interactions, social problems and institutions within society.
Sociology introduces students to Families and Households, Education and Research Methods at AS; Crime and Deviance, Theory and Methods and Beliefs in Society at A2.
How will you learn?
Each subject draws on scientific methods to gather evidence to test hypotheses and answer questions. A strong emphasis in lessons is on discussion and debate in which we are constantly assessing the quality of theory and evidence as the source of understanding. In addition there are opportunities for small research projects and presentations. Both subjects are examined through written exams and require some extended writing as well as short answer questions.
What extra opportunities are there?
There will be opportunities to attend educational trips and visits, including a lecture at Chester Zoo (Psychology) and a trip to Manchester Crown Court (Sociology).
