Final Agony for SGS
A sudden death penalty miss was the difference between agony and ecstasy in the ESFA Year 9 Small Schools Cup Final.
Having already beaten two teams in similar fashion en route to the final, held at Reading FC’s Madejski Stadium, it was third time unlucky for SGS.
On a perfect day for football, opponents Shenfield High started the brighter, forcing SGS to defend for the first 15 minutes.
The visitors never really threatened with their best chances coming from set plays in and around the area. The game had become void of clear goal scoring opportunities, with both teams cancelling each other out for the full 70 minutes.
This would be a test of nerves, and sadly it was SGS who couldn’t convert the vital penalty.
However, the players can be justifiably proud of their efforts in reaching the final in their first attempt, finishing runners-up from 140 schools that entered.
Well done to everyone! We are extremely proud of you all!
