Study English Literature at SGS Sixth Form

Students achieving a Grade B at both English Language and English Literature GCSE are eligible to study English Literature (AQA) AS/A2 Level Syllabus B.

AS Level
At AS level, students are expected to show knowledge and understanding of the following: literary studies, using appropriate terminology and accurate expression; literary texts of different types and periods; how texts relate to the contexts in which they are written; the different ways in which texts are interpreted by different readers, taking into account the fact that texts have a range of meanings and that these meanings are constructed through the reader’s own knowledge, experience and values; how writers use form, structure and language to shape meaning.

A2 Level
At A2 level, the following requirements are added: how texts relate to the contexts in which they were written, including the importance of cultural, historical and other contextual influences on texts; the significance of literary traditions, periods and movements in relation to texts studied; the ways in which texts have been interpreted and valued by different readers at different times, acknowledging that interpretation of texts depends upon readers’ own values; the connection and comparisons between texts and how texts relate to one another.
