Girls Football and Basketball Success

Ashton on Mersey were the visitors on Tuesday night.....

Girls Football

....for the next game in the Under 14’s league. Ashton settled well and took an early lead but after 15 minutes Alice Noakes curled in a vicious corner which the keeper couldn’t hold to equalise for SGS. Just before the break one of the 4 rising stars from Year 7 (playing up 2 age categories!), Hannah Cook, coolly slotted home in a one on one with the visiting goalkeeper.

After the break Ashton came out fighting and soon equalised. Despite creative work form the Myin twins in midfield and a few chances at either end, it was Ashton who took the points with a goal in the final 3 minutes. Player of the match was Princess Cole who gave a sterling performance in between the sticks for SGS.

Special mention to Emma Horsley who wasn’t available for the game as she was representing Manchester United in their Development Squad. Well done Emma.

Girls Basketball

The Year 7 team and the Year 9/10 team travelled to Urmston Grammar on Wednesday to play in the qualifying rounds of the Trafford Schools Cup Competition. The top two teams from each of the leagues would progress to the Final round of games in a few weeks’ time.

The Year 7’s secured their place by being one of only 2 teams that turned up, which proves the adage “you have to be in it to win it”. Good performances from Emma Horsley, Ava Borrodaile-Falp and Darcey Robinson amongst others for their excellent performances.

The Year 9/10’s team had a challenge facing Urmston Grammar, Lostock and Broadoak. After a close game with Urmston that saw Urmsoton win by a fine margin, the girls needed to win the next two games. A victory against Lostock set up a “winner takes all” v Broadheath.

Losing 8-6 with 55 seconds on the clock, Nifemi Jafojo scored 2 baskets inside 15 seconds and despite a last ditch attempt by Broadoak, SGS progressed to the Finals later on this month. Special mentions to the whole team of Alina Kamianets, Taia Myin, Ruby Myin, Alice Noakes, Rahmat Bayo and Yasmin Ojerinde for their success.
