On beautiful summer’s day, the whole of Year 8 set off to Snowdonia to explore the impact of Glaciation on the physical and human geography of the UK.  In an action packed day, students were able to build upon their knowledge from the classroom, where we have been studying glacial processes and how the last Ice Age shaped our planet.  First stop was to Cwm Idwal, a textbook example of a glacial corrie on a mountainside, which looks down the u-shaped valley of Nant Ffrancon. Year 8 were able to spot the glacial features that they had studied in class in real life, as well as admire the outstanding beauty of Snowdonia. After a quick hike down the mountainside, it was onto our next stop, the National Slate Museum in Llanberis, where students were able to see the impact of the rock cycle and how humans have used natural resources throughout history. The slate splitting demonstration and the huge waterwheel, which once powered the then hi-tech machinery of the mine and workshop, were the highlights. 

The trip was a great success; introducing new landscapes to students, building upon classroom knowledge and providing the foundation for future learning in Year 9. Year 8 were fantastic throughout the day and members of the public commented on their exemplary behaviour. Well done Year 8!
