Stretford Grammar Students Savour the Flavours of Naples

A delightful culinary experience!

In June 2025, a group of lucky Year 9 students had the unforgettable opportunity to travel to Naples, Italy, for an immersive and educational Food Studies trip. This remarkable experience was designed to enhance their understanding of food, culture, and nutrition — enriching their studies as they prepared to enter Year 9 and offering a taste (quite literally!) of what to expect from GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition.

The trip provided students with a first-hand look at Italy’s world-famous culinary traditions. Their journey began with a visit to an Italian olive oil mill, where they discovered the intricate process of producing olive oil from grove to bottle. This was followed by a fascinating visit to a traditional farmhouse in Sorrento, where students watched a live mozzarella-making demonstration and were able to sample the delicious, freshly made cheese.

One of the highlights was a hands-on gnocchi-making workshop. Students rolled up their sleeves and learned how to prepare this classic Sorrento dish from scratch — before sitting down to enjoy the fruits of their labour. For those with a sweet tooth, a visit to a local gelateria proved to be a real treat. There, they were given a demonstration on traditional gelato-making techniques and, of course, enjoyed tasting a variety of authentic Italian flavours.

Students were also able to take part in a pizza-making class, becoming true pizzaioli as they crafted their own Italian pizzas in an authentic setting — an experience many described as the highlight of their trip.

The adventure didn’t stop there. The group also enjoyed a full-day boat excursion along the breathtaking Amalfi Coast, where they explored the local area and sampled coastal cuisine in one of the most picturesque settings imaginable.

Miss Ashall, who organised the trip alongside Miss Khadem, reflected on the success of the journey:

It was wonderful to see our students so engaged and excited by the food experiences on offer. Watching them learn outside the classroom — while immersed in Italian culture — was truly rewarding. This trip was everything we hoped it would be and more.

Miss Khadem added:

Italy provided the perfect setting for our budding food lovers. From the olive groves to the gelaterias, every moment offered a learning opportunity. The students were curious, enthusiastic, and a joy to travel with.

The Naples trip was more than just a chance to travel — it was a delicious, educational journey that will stay with the students for years to come. It deepened their appreciation for global cuisine and gave them practical skills and memories they’ll never forget.

Bravissimo to all involved!
