British Cycling Search for New Talent
Are you the next Bradley Wiggins?
We are thrilled to announce that on Wednesday, 6th May 2026, Stretford Grammar School will welcome expert coaches from British Cycling for an exclusive Talent Identification (ID) Day.
This is a unique opportunity for our Year 8 and Year 9 students to showcase their potential and potentially follow in the footsteps of Olympic legends. British Cycling is on the hunt for the next generation of track stars, and they believe the raw talent could be right here in our hallways. The session is designed to find students with the physical attributes and drive to succeed in competitive cycling. You don't need to be a "pro" already—you just need a bike-ready attitude!
What to expect:
-
Wattbike Challenges: Students will use stationary Wattbikes to measure power output, speed, and endurance.
-
Physical Assessments: Coaches will look at various fitness markers and coordination drills.
-
Pathway Presentation: A brief look into the world of professional cycling and the "Rider Route" to the Great Britain Cycling Team.
The Ultimate Prize: Students who impress the coaches will be invited to a prestigious 8–10 week training course at the Manchester Velodrome (The National Cycling Centre). This world-class facility is the home of British Cycling, and successful students will receive expert coaching on the famous wooden track.
Adding to the excitement, we are proud to welcome Charlie Holt to the school for the day. Charlie is a rising star in the cycling world, currently competing on the British Cycling Junior Pathway. Having navigated the exact transition from school sports to elite-level training, Charlie understands the dedication and thrill of the sport better than anyone. Charlie will be hosting a drop-in "Meet & Greet" in the gym during both break and lunch. Whether you want to know how fast it feels to ride the Velodrome bankings, how to balance training with school, or just see his pro-kit up close, come by for a chat!
Year 8 and 9 students should ensure they have their PE kits ready for the day. No prior racing experience is required—just bring your energy and your competitive spirit!
