Stretford Grammar’s Gold DofE Team Conquer the Peak District

Practice ticked off - next stop qualifying!

Earlier this month, our determined Year 12 Gold cohort took a massive step toward achieving their ultimate youth achievement accolade. Trading their sixth form dress code for walking boots and heavy rucksacks, the group headed into the heart of the Peak District for their official Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Gold Practice expedition.

Spanning three challengin but spectacular days across the Hope and Edale valleys, the trip was designed to test the students’ resilience, campcraft, and independent navigation. It serves as the vital final hurdle before they head north for their definitive Qualifying expedition in the rugged terrain of the Lake District this coming June.

Over 30 Kilometres, Two Campsites, and One Massive Downpour

The Peak District is famous for its stunning scenery, but it is equally famous for its unpredictable weather—and May certainly lived up to that reputation. Over the course of the three-day venture, the students journeyed over 30 kilometres, carrying everything they needed to survive on their backs.

Setting up and breaking down camp at two different campsites, the teams had to put their practical skills to the immediate test. From pitching tents efficiently to cooking nutritious meals on outdoor stoves, every bit of preparation mattered. This was especially true when the heavens opened. The teams battled through some tricky underfoot conditions and heavy downpours, demonstrating the kind of grit and determination that the Gold Award is designed to foster.

World-Class Guidance from Sam Sykes Ltd

To ensure our students received the safest and most enriching experience possible, the expedition was led by the expert instructors from Sam Sykes Ltd. Renowned across the UK as a top-tier provider of outdoor education, Sam Sykes Ltd brings decades of elite, professional expedition management to the table.

From the outset, their team delivered first-rate provision. Their instructors didn’t just monitor from afar; they actively empowered the students, stepping back to allow independent decision-making while ensuring safety remained paramount. The high quality of their communication, premium safety protocols, and enthusiasm turned a damp weekend into an unforgettable learning adventure.

Reflecting on the cohort's performance, Expedition Lead Instructors Myles Morley and Jonathan Owen praised the team's attitude:

The weather threw just about everything at them, from heavy rain to muddy tracks, but the Stretford Grammar students showed exceptional character. Their navigation stayed sharp under pressure, and their teamwork on the campsites was encouraging. They are now ready for the challenges awaiting them in the Lake District next month.

Conquering the Shivering Mountain

Despite the blisters and the rain, the expedition gave students a front-row seat to some breathtaking landscapes. The Hope and Edale valleys looked spectacular, with deep green troughs, historic stone walls, and the dramatic ridges of the Stanage Edge framing their journey.

The highlight came on the final day: the ascent of Mam Tor (known historically as the 'Shivering Mountain'). As the students pushed through the final kilometres of their 30km trek, they climbed the iconic paving stone paths to the summit. Standing 517 metres above sea level, the rain cleared enough to reward the teams with panoramic, sweeping views across the Edale Valley and the distant Kinder Scout plateau. It was a moment of pure triumph, wiping away the fatigue of the previous forty-eight hours.

Next Stop: The Lake District

With their practice expedition successfully ticked off, the Gold DofE squad has proven they have the navigational precision and campcraft maturity to handle wild country.

The countdown is now officially on for June, where steeper inclines, bigger crags, and four days of independent trekking await them in Cumbria. Congratulations to all the participants for a fantastic Peak District venture—bring on the Lakes!
