Inspirational Workshop from Renowned Artist Ian Murphy

Stretford Grammar School recently welcomed acclaimed contemporary fine artist Ian Murphy for an inspiring drawing workshop with a selected group of Year 10 Art students. Drawing on his professional expertise, Ian guided the group through a series of practical exercises that focused on observing and recording architectural features.
The fast-paced workshop encouraged students to develop their technical drawing skills, explore texture, master perspective, and capture fine detail. Through these exercises, the young artists gained a deeper appreciation of the built environment. The event provided direct insight into the working practices of a professional artist while supporting the development of the students' own creative paths.
Context: About the Artist
Ian Murphy is a UK-based fine artist known for his atmospheric mixed-media paintings and tonal drawings. He graduated from Sheffield University with First Class Honours in Fine Art, Painting, and Printmaking, and first gained major recognition in 1985 when he was selected as one of the British Young Contemporary Artists.
His professional practice focuses heavily on urban landscapes and architecture. His work explores themes of time, history, erosion, and decay within forgotten or historic architectural spaces. Ian routinely travels the globe to gather inspiration for his large-scale canvases, translating physical structures into moody, layered visual stories.
Reflections from the Art Department
The workshop created an atmosphere of focused energy in the studio, giving GCSE students a safe environment to step outside their comfort zones.
Curriculum Leader for Art, Mrs Penny-Collins, shared her pride in the students:
"Welcoming Ian Murphy to Stretford Grammar School was a privilege. Our Year 10 students approached the challenge with real focus and determination. Watching them manipulate texture and perspective under Ian’s guidance showed just how much creative potential they possess. This experience will certainly elevate the quality of their upcoming portfolio work."
Year 10 Art student, Polly, reflected on what she learned during the session:
"Working with Ian Murphy completely changed how I look at buildings. He showed us how to notice the hidden details and textures in regular structures, and how to use quick layers to bring a drawing to life. It was amazing to learn from a real artist, and I feel much more confident experimenting with my own coursework now."
This engagement marks another step forward for the school's creative curriculum, leaving students inspired to apply these advanced techniques to their future projects.
