Year 7 Students Explored Sikh Faith with Visits to Whalley Range Gurdwara

The Religious Education Department organised a pair of educational visits to the Sri Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara in Whalley Range for Year 7 students.

To accommodate the capacity of the Gurdwara and match the interest shown in previous years, the department split the cohort across two separate dates: Wednesday 3rd June 2026 and Wednesday 24th June 2026.

Curriculum Enrichment and Community Links

The excursion enriched the Year 7 RE curriculum, which focuses on the nature and purpose of religious buildings. The trips also served to strengthen the connection between Stretford Grammar School and the local faith community.

During the visit, students experienced:

  • A guided tour of the Gurdwara architecture and sacred spaces.
  • A presentation outlining core Sikh beliefs, traditions, and values.
  • Participation in Langar, a traditional communal meal consisting of a simple, nut-free, and meat-free flavoured rice dish.

Insights into Living Faith

The visits offered students a chance to see their classroom learning put into practice within a community setting. Mrs Lea, Curriculum Leader for Religious Studies, highlighted the importance of experiential learning for the students:

"Visits to places of worship provide our students with an understanding of living faith communities. This trip allowed Year 7 to see how core values of equality and service operate within the Gurdwara, bringing our curriculum topics to life. We value our connection with the Sri Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara and looked forward to these educational sessions."
