The Stretford Grammar School community has once again proven the strength of its spirit and determination. Mr Howarth, our Assistant SENDCo, recently took on the formidable Keswick to Hale Bike Ride to raise vital funds for The Christie NHS Foundation Trust—a charity deeply close to the hearts of so many across our school family.

A Test of True Endurance

The Keswick to Hale challenge is far from a scenic stroll on two wheels. Crossing over 100 miles from the heart of the Lake District all the way back to Cheshire, the route presents relentless ascents, gruelling terrain, and a true test of physical and mental stamina. Leaving the rugged hills of Cumbria behind and pushing through miles of demanding roads required incredible resilience—qualities Mr Howarth possesses in abundance.

Originally, the event was set to feature a very familiar face alongside him: former Headteacher Mr Mullins, who planned to take part to support the extraordinary, life-saving work carried out daily by The Christie. Though plans changed, the motivation to back such a crucial cause remained front and centre throughout every mile of the journey.

£21,000 and Counting!

Crossing the finish line was a triumphant moment, not just for Mr Howarth, but for the entire event team. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, families, and local communities, the collective team raised an incredible over £21,000 for The Christie Cancer Charity. These funds will directly support groundbreaking research, specialized treatment, and compassionate care for cancer patients across the region.

Reflecting on the gruelling effort and the overwhelming community backing, Mr Howarth shared:

"When your legs are burning on those Lake District climbs, you just remind yourself why you’re doing it. The Christie does such remarkable work for so many families—including our own school community—that every hill and every mile was completely worth it. To see the team total top £21,000 is just humbling, and I’m so grateful for all the support."
