16-19 Bursary
Students in the Sixth Form, who may be in need of some financial support, can apply to the School’s 16 to 19 Bursary Fund. This is a fund which has been allocated directly by the Government to individual schools to administer. We are committed to distributing bursaries to those students with the greatest need. All students will be encouraged to complete the online application at the start of the term in September. The link is also provided at the end of this page.
We are committed to ensuring everyone who should have access to this fund receives it to support them in their studies.
16-19 Bursary: who qualifies for the bursary?
1. Overview
The Bursary is money that can contribute towards to cost of:
- Smart clothing in accordance with our Dress Code, books, a calculator, and other equipment and stationary for your course
- Lunch
- Transport related costs such as an ‘Our Pass’ bus pass or other reasonable travel expenses
- Travel to University Open Days and interviews.
There are two types of 16 to 19 bursaries:
- A discretionary bursary
- A bursary for students in vulnerable groups.
Discretionary bursary
You could get a discretionary bursary if you need financial help but do not qualify for a bursary for students in vulnerable groups. You do not get a regular payment; you can use your allocation to claim for items, trips or travel essential to your study. The amount allocated to you depends on the number of successful applicants we have, your specific circumstances and the total amount allocated to us by the government.
If you’re over 19, you’ll only be eligible for a discretionary bursary.
To remain eligible to claim a Bursary, you must ensure that you maintain an attendance of 95% or better, your punctuality is excellent and you are meeting our learning and behaviour expectations.
We may review your eligibility if you are found to be claiming for items not vital to your studies.
Bursary for students in vulnerable groups
You could get a bursary worth up to £1,200, depending on your circumstances and benefits. This sum is the maximum you can receive, the amount you get is dependent on your specific circumstances.
Eligibility
Discretionary bursary
This is dependent on your total household income, which must be below £28,500. You will be asked to provide some financial documents in your application to decide if you are eligible.
You can apply for a discretionary bursary if you’re over 19 and either:
- Continuing on a course you started aged 16 to 18 (known as being a ‘19+ continuer’)
- Have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
Bursary for students in vulnerable groups
You may be able to get a bursary if at least one of the following applies:
- You’re in or you recently left local authority care
- You get Income Support or Universal Credit because you’re financially supporting yourself.
- You get Disability Living Allowance (DLA) in your name and either Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit.
- You get Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in your name and either ESA or Universal Credit.
