Senior Maths Challenge 2025

Stretford Grammar Students Rise to the Challenge in National Maths Competition
Over 50 ambitious students from Stretford Grammar School voluntarily took part in today’s Senior Maths Challenge, a prestigious national competition designed to stretch and inspire the most mathematically able students across the UK. The challenge, run by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT), tests students’ problem-solving skills, logical reasoning, and mathematical creativity — all under timed conditions. It’s a demanding but rewarding experience that encourages students to think beyond the curriculum and apply their knowledge in unfamiliar contexts.
Mr McAvoy, Head of Mathematics, praised the students’ enthusiasm: “It’s fantastic to see so many of our sixth formers and Year 11s stepping up to take on this challenge. Their willingness to engage with complex problems shows real intellectual curiosity and resilience.”
Participation in the Senior Maths Challenge is entirely voluntary, making the turnout even more impressive. It reflects the school’s ethos of academic ambition and the students’ drive for self-improvement. Mrs Mycock, Second in the Mathematics Department, added: “The challenge is not just about getting the right answers — it’s about developing a mindset that embraces challenge and uncertainty. Our students consistently show they’re up for that.”
The results of the challenge will be released in the coming weeks, with the potential for students to earn Bronze, Silver, or Gold certificates, and even qualify for follow-on rounds. Regardless of the outcome, today’s event is a celebration of mathematical excellence and a testament to the school’s commitment to nurturing independent, reflective learners.
