Peak Performance: Year 10 Conquer the Bronze DofE

The first group of participants receive their Bronze Certificate

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the latest cohort of Year 10 students at Stretford Grammar School who have officially completed their Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Bronze Award. This achievement is the culmination of months of dedication, resilience, and community spirit.

Achieving the Bronze Award is no small feat. To earn their badges, students had to commit to four specific sections, demonstrating consistency and personal growth over several months:

  • Voluntary: Giving back to the community, from helping at local charities to coaching younger peers.
  • Physical: Improving fitness through sports, dance, or fitness challenges.
  • Skills: Developing a new talent, such as playing an instrument, cooking, or coding.
  • Expedition: A three-day, two-night venture into the countryside.
Adventure in the Forest of Bowland

The highlight of the program took place during Active Learning Week in July 2025. Our students headed to the picturesque Forest of Bowland, setting up camp at the Waddecar Activity Centre. Blessed with exceptionally clear weather, the groups navigated the rolling hills and gritstone fells that surround the centre. Carrying all their own equipment—including tents, stoves, and food—the students demonstrated impressive map-reading skills and teamwork. Beyond the physical challenge, the expedition provided a rare chance to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature and one another.

More Than Just a Badge

The DofE Award is globally recognised for its ability to transform young people. It builds confidence, independence, and leadership skills that are invaluable for future college applications and employment. By stepping outside their comfort zones, our Year 10s have proven they can handle pressure and work effectively as a team.

While many have already crossed the finish line, many more Year 10 students are currently in the final stages of uploading their evidence and are very close to completing their awards.

Mr Price, Stretford Grammar’s DofE Leader, commented: "It has been a privilege to watch this year group tackle the challenges of the Bronze Award. From the grit they showed climbing the hills around Waddecar to the kindness they’ve shown in their volunteering, they have been true ambassadors for Stretford Grammar. The Forest of Bowland expedition was a particular highlight—seeing them navigate successfully in the sunshine was a proud moment for all the staff involved."

Congratulations to all our Bronze achievers! We look forward to seeing many of you progress to Gold whilst in our Sixth Form.
