Staff Go the Extra Mile for The Christie at Tatton Park

Stretford Staff are Proud to be Supporting our Local Community

Several members of the Stretford Grammar School staff have been putting in the miles for a fantastic cause. Last weekend, a dedicated team of runners took to the scenic trails of Tatton Park to compete in the RunThrough 10k, raising an incredible £1898 for The Christie Hospital.

The Challenge: RunThrough Tatton Park

The RunThrough series is well-known for its fast and undulating courses, and the 10k event at Tatton Park is no exception. Our staff runners—Mrs Baxter, Mr Howell, and Ms Selby—were joined by former science teacher Mr Hilary to tackle the 6.2-mile course.

Setting off on a crisp morning, the team navigated the park’s closed roads, cheered on by local supporters and the park's famous resident deer. Despite the physical challenge of the "undulating" terrain, the team’s spirits remained high as they crossed the finish line to collect their well-earned medals.

Supporting a Manchester Icon: The Christie

The funds raised will go directly to The Christie Charity, an organisation that is incredibly close to the hearts of many in our school community. As the largest single-site cancer centre in Europe, The Christie provides world-class treatment and care to over 60,000 patients every year.

Charitable donations are vital because they fund services and equipment that go "above and beyond" standard NHS provision. This includes:

  • Pioneering Research: Funding clinical trials that lead to new, life-saving treatments.
  • Enhanced Facilities: Providing a more comfortable and supportive environment for patients and their families.
  • Specialist Equipment: Investing in the latest technology, such as the UK’s first high-energy proton beam therapy centre.
A Word from the Starting Line

Reflecting on the achievement and the generous donations from colleagues, parents, and friends, Mrs Baxter emphasised why the team felt compelled to take part:

"Taking part in events like the Tatton 10k is about so much more than just the running. It’s about coming together as a community to support a cause that touches so many lives. The Christie is a beacon of hope for people across Manchester and beyond, and knowing that every step we took helps fund vital research and patient care made every mile worth it. We are overwhelmed by the support we've received from the Stretford Grammar family."

We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who donated to the team. Your generosity has helped turn a Sunday morning run into a significant contribution to the fight against cancer.
