Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration

On Wednesday 27 January, four Year 12 students accompanied staff to the Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration at the Robert Bolt Theatre, Waterside Arts Centre in Sale. This year’s theme, Bridging Generations, was central to the event and explored through powerful testimonies. Speakers included descendants of survivors of Auschwitz and Treblinka, as well as individuals who have recently sought refuge in the United Kingdom after fleeing conflict or persecution. The commemoration also recognised those affected by more recent genocides, including events in Darfur.

The programme emphasised the importance of listening to the experiences of those who lived through the Holocaust and understanding the continued impact of prejudice and discrimination today. One student reflected: “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn more about such a significant historical event. Sharing what I have learnt helps ensure that the struggles and resilience of others are never forgotten”.

As a school community, we recognise our responsibility to learn from the past and to use these lessons to shape a more compassionate and just future. By engaging with Holocaust Memorial Day, we strengthen the connection between remembrance and meaningful action.
