Year 12 Visit the Hallowed Halls of Cambridge

A Glimpse into the Future
On a day where aspiration met inspiration, our Year 12 students travelled to the University of Cambridge for an immersive Open Day. The trip, meticulously organized by Assistant Headteacher Mrs. Akhter, offered a golden opportunity for our students to step beyond the classroom and into the life of one of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions.
Stepping Through History: St John’s College
The day was centered at St John’s College, one of Cambridge’s oldest and largest colleges. Founded in 1511 by Lady Margaret Beaufort (mother of King Henry VII), the college is a masterpiece of Tudor and Victorian architecture.
As students were guided through the majestic "courts" and across the famous Bridge of Sighs, they walked the same cobbles as some of history’s greatest minds. Famous alumni include:
- William Wordsworth: The legendary Romantic poet.
- William Wilberforce: The leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade.
- Douglas Adams: Author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
- Lord Byron: While technically at neighbouring Trinity College, the "mad, bad, and dangerous to know" poet is a local legend for his defiance of college rules. When told he couldn't keep a pet dog in his room, Byron famously brought a tame bear instead, arguing that the statutes didn't specifically forbid ursine companions!
Demystifying the Application Process
Beyond the stunning scenery, the day was about practical preparation. Students attended seminars detailing the Cambridge application process, which is unique in its focus on academic depth. Key takeaways included:
- The October Deadline: UCAS applications for Cambridge close much earlier than most (October 15th).
- The Interview: A dialogue-based session designed to mimic a "supervision"—the small-group teaching style that defines the Cambridge experience.
- Super-Curriculars: The importance of exploring a subject beyond the school curriculum through wider reading, podcasts, or independent research.
The benefits of studying here are vast—from world-leading facilities to the "supervision" system, which provides students with unparalleled access to experts in their field.
Critical Thinking in Action
The afternoon concluded with a super-curricular task designed to stretch the students' analytical muscles. Moving away from "right or wrong" answers, the task required them to use critical thinking skills—evaluating evidence, identifying bias, and constructing logical arguments. This "thinking out loud" approach is exactly what Cambridge admissions tutors look for: a teachable mind that is unafraid of complex problems.
Our students were incredibly engaged throughout the day, asking probing questions that showed they are already thinking like undergraduates. The hospitality from the St John’s staff and the current students was first-rate; they truly made the prospect of applying to such a historic place feel attainable — Mrs. Akhter, Assistant Headteacher
