Year 7 and 8 Girls’ Rugby Squad Impress in Recent Tournaments

Our Year 7 and 8 girls’ rugby team have competed in a series of tournaments over the past few weeks, demonstrating significant development, tactical awareness, and sportsmanship. For the majority of the squad, these fixtures marked their first competitive experience in the sport.
Early Progress and Results
The team's tournament campaign began with a challenging set of fixtures. After conceding an initial 8-0 defeat to Urmston, the players adjusted their tactics to secure a 4-4 draw against All Hallows. The squad concluded the opening tournament with consecutive victories, defeating the All Hallows’ second team 8-4 and achieving the same 8-4 scoreline against Irlam. Amelia received the Player of the Match award for her team leadership and consistent on-pitch communication.
Technical Development at BTH
The squad built upon these performances at their most recent tournament, held yesterday at Blessed Thomas Holford (BTH). Defensively, the team limited the opposition's forward momentum through structured tackling. Reem, Eve, Amelia, and Sophia executed key tackles to halt attacking phases, while Eve was named Player of the Match for her defensive work rate and success in regaining possession for the team. In attack, the team utilised width and pace to breach the opposition's defensive line:
Try Scorers: Aaminah and Lena scored points following a structured team build-up.
Spatial Awareness: Sophia regularly identified and accelerated into open space to advance the ball.
Pace: Elizabeth, Ruqayya, and Poppy used their running speed to transition the ball into the opposition half and maintain defensive pressure.
Out of more than 50 pupils competing at the event, Reem was officially awarded the "Best First Time Player" title for her adaptability and performance on the day.
"The progress the girls have made in such a short timeframe is a testament to their work ethic," noted PE Teacher Miss Baker. "Transitioning from training to competitive tournament play requires rapid decision-making and strong communication. To see players like Reem and Eve recognised for their individual contributions is excellent, but the collective cohesive play and defensive resilience from the entire squad is what stood out most across both events."
The PE Department and wider school community congratulate the squad on their performances and look forward to their upcoming fixtures.
