Year 8 Athletes Shine at the Iconic Manchester Regional Arena!

On Thursday 4th June, a squad of 13 talented Year 8 athletes represented Stretford Grammar School at a major athletics competition, held at the historic Regional Athletics Arena in Manchester. Competing at this specific venue added an extra layer of magic to the day; as part of the Sportcity complex, the Arena sits right next to the Etihad Stadium and was originally built as the warm-up track for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Over the years, it has hosted the British Athletics Championships and welcomed Olympic icons like Usain Bolt and Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Stepping onto the same world-class blue track and pristine field where legends have trained, our Year 8 athletes rose to the occasion with spectacular determination, resilience, and sportsmanship.

A Podium Rush for the Boys' Team

The boys' team put on an absolute masterclass across both track and field events, displaying fantastic squad depth to finish an incredible 3rd place overall in the team standings.

The silver medals came thick and fast, with the boys dominating the second-place spots:

  • Tobias pulled off a spectacular individual double, securing 2nd place in the Long Jump (3.73m) and a phenomenal 2nd place finish in the grueling 800m with a time of 2:39.
  • Sanjay launched an excellent throw of 16m to take 2nd place in the Javelin.
  • Mustafa displayed massive strength in the Shot Put, locking in 2nd place with a 5.8m throw.
  • Sean cleared the bar beautifully in the High Jump, securing 2nd place at 1.30m.

The track saw brilliant sprint depth as well, with Will (200m), Omar (300m), and Hugo (100m) all powering through their respective finals to take 3rd place finishes. To cap off a brilliant day for the boys, the Relay Team executed flawless baton handovers to claim a well-deserved 3rd place on the podium.

Superb Performances from the Girls

The girls matched the boys' competitive spirit, delivering standout individual performances against a highly competitive field:

  • Cece flew through the 100m sprint in a lightning-fast 14.4 seconds and demonstrated incredible versatility by also clearing 1.30m in the High Jump.
  • Rufta showed superb technique in the Javelin, recording an excellent 15.7m throw.
  • Kat proved her endurance and agility, running a strong 2:55 in the 800m and jumping a massive 3.85m in the Long Jump.
  • Amelia (200m in 34.8s), Bohita (Shot Put at 5.6m), and Izzy (300m) all put in incredibly hard-fought performances, racking up vital points for the school.
Understanding the Numbers: The National Context

To appreciate what these young athletes are achieving, it is inspiring to look at where their benchmarks sit relative to the absolute pinnacle of the sport. National Under-14 and Under-15 UK records represent the absolute historical limit of junior athletics—with national U15 records sitting around 11.55s for the boys' 100m, 2:03 for the 800m, and over 50m for the javelin.

For school athletes competing in a local tournament, hitting times like Cece’s 14.4s 100m sprint or Tobias’s 2:39 800m means they are operating at a highly competitive regional standard. Finding themselves within striking distance of the absolute best in the country at such a young age shows the raw potential brewing within this Stretford Grammar squad.

A Word from the PE Department

"It was an absolute privilege to watch our Year 8 students compete at such an iconic venue," said PE teacher Miss Baker. "The history of the Regional Arena can be intimidating, but our athletes didn't let that faze them. They cheered each other on, pushed through the fatigue, and showed standard-setting sportsmanship from the first whistle to the final relay. Coming away with a 3rd place overall finish for the boys and so many personal bests across the entire squad is a testament to their hard work and positive attitudes. They should be immensely proud of themselves!"

Congratulations to all 13 athletes who represented Stretford Grammar so brilliantly. Your commitment and enthusiasm made it an unforgettable day of athletics!
