Year 7 Dami Shines in Portugal with Manchester City U12s

Stretford Grammar School is celebrating the sporting achievements of Year 7 student Dami, who recently returned from representing the Manchester City Under-12s in a prestigious international tournament in Portugal.

Earning a place in a Premier League youth academy is a great honour, requiring immense dedication. The English academy system is designed to identify and nurture top-tier young talent. Players progress through strict age groups, receiving elite coaching, tactical training, and educational support to prepare them for the demands of professional football.

A Test of Character

The tournament in Portugal tested the squad to its absolute limits. Due to unexpected circumstances, Manchester City travelled to the 11-a-side tournament with a squad of just 14 players. The challenge intensified when a couple of the boys picked up injuries, leaving the team to play a succession of matches with no available substitutes.

Despite the physical exhaustion, the group pulled together, proved to be superb teammates, and showed immense character. Dami and his squad battled through two tense penalty shoot-outs to reach the grand final at the local stadium, where they finished as runners-up after a hard-fought match against Spanish side Sevilla.

Praise from the Academy and School

The tournament showcase highlighted both the athletic and personal growth of the young players involved. Joanna Johnson, Manchester City's Education Coordinator, praised the group's development:

"Our academy system places equal value on character and footballing ability. The resilience these players showed in Portugal, supporting one another through injuries and playing without substitutes, embodies the exact values we look to instil. Dami and his teammates represented the club excellently both on and off the pitch."

Back at school, the excitement was equally high. Miss King, Progress Leader for Year 7 and a dedicated Manchester City supporter, added:

"We are incredibly proud of Dami. To compete at such a high international level is a brilliant achievement, but to do so with such determination and team spirit makes it even more special. As a huge City fan, it is fantastic to see one of our own Year 7 students wearing the shirt and showing such tremendous character against top European opposition."
