Trafford Handball Triumphs: Fraser and Ben Take on the World Stage

Stretford Grammar School is proud to celebrate the sporting achievements of two of our talented students, Fraser (Year 10) and Ben (Year 11). Earlier this Term, both boys travelled to Gothenburg, Sweden, to represent Trafford Handball Club in the Partille World Cup—the largest youth handball tournament on the planet. The Partille World Cup is the ultimate global stage for youth handball. Every year, tens of thousands of young athletes from over 50 nations descend upon Sweden for a week-long tournament. Competing in the competitive Under-16 (U16) category, Fraser and Ben faced some of the finest academy teams and international talent in the sport.
The Trafford team faced stiff competition from the outset, but teamwork and determination saw them progress. In a tense finish to the group stages, the squad advanced to the Round of 32 on goal difference. Their knockout match proved to be a thriller. With the scores deadlocked at full-time, the game pushed into a high-stakes extra-time period. In a close finish, Trafford missed out on advancement, losing 15-14 via a dramatic Golden Goal. Despite the defeat, reaching the top 32 on the world stage is a major achievement.
Both Stretford students played pivotal roles in Trafford's success throughout the week, Ben anchored the team with his experience, delivering standout performances under pressure and driving the team forward during the intense knockout stages. Fraser stepped up against older, more physical U16 opponents, showing skill, grit, and maturity on the court.
The boys' dedication caught the attention of staff back at home. Speaking on their achievement, Mr Hodgson, Curriculum Leader for PE, said: "To compete at the Partille World Cup is a phenomenal achievement in itself, but to progress to the knockout rounds and push world-class opposition to a golden goal shows resilience. Both Fraser and Ben have demonstrated the peak of sportsmanship, dedication, and talent. They have represented both Trafford and Stretford Grammar School on the international stage with pride, and they should be proud of their efforts."
Our congratulations go to both Ben and Fraser on a tournament to remember! We look forward to seeing their handball careers continue to flourish.
