Year 10 Student Excels During Culinery Work Experience

Tilly, Year 10, took part in the celebrated FutureChef competition, a nationwide search designed to discover the next generation of culinary talent. Competing against some of the best young cooks in the area, Tilly progressed to the regional heats, where she finished as a close runner-up. While she missed out on the top spot, Tilly's skill, focus, and composure under pressure caught the attention of the panel. Impressed by her potential, key figures helped secure a unique prize: a work experience placement at the high-profile Manchester Deansgate Hotel. Special thanks go to Abbie McKeever, whose support and coordination made this remarkable opportunity possible for Tilly.

Working with the Best

During her placement, Tilly will work in the hotel's fast-paced kitchens alongside two prominent culinary figures:

  • Charlotte Fisher – A respected head chef known for her precision and modern British menus.
  • Gokhan Kesen – An experienced pastry chef celebrated for his intricate technique and artistic presentation.

Under their guidance, Tilly is already working on high-level plates. Her preparation work includes intricate, modern dishes such as a structured butternut squash creation, which features roasted and shaved squash, toasted pumpkin seeds, vibrant herb oil, delicate purées, and crisp croûtes.

A Launchpad for a Culinary Career

For a Year 10 student, this placement offers far more than standard work experience. It provides several distinct advantages for Tilly's future:

Industry-Level Speed: Cooking at home or in a school food technology room cannot replicate the heat and pressure of a commercial kitchen. Tilly will see how a team coordinates to feed hundreds of guests simultaneously.

Mentorship: Working under chefs like Fisher and Kesen allows Tilly to absorb high-level techniques, from precise knife skills to complex plating methods, directly from the source.

Career Networking: The hospitality industry thrives on connections. Making a strong impression at a major Manchester hotel can lead to future apprenticeships, part-time jobs, or permanent roles after graduation.

Tilly's journey proves that competition success is not just about winning first place. Her determination, raw talent, and the support of mentors like Abbie McKeever have opened doors to the highest levels of the culinary trade.
