Year 9 Students Conquer the Peaks: 114 Pupils Complete Expedition in the Peak District

Stretford Grammar School is proud to celebrate the achievements of 114 Year 9 students who successfully completed a three-day expedition amid the stunning scenery of the Edale and Hope Valleys in the Peak District National Park. Split into 17 groups, students spent three days building essential outdoor skills, testing their resilience, and working together as teams — all set against one of the most dramatic landscapes in the country. The Edale and Hope Valleys sit at the heart of the Peak District, flanked by the high moorland of Kinder Scout and Mam Tor, and have long been a proving ground for walkers and expeditioners thanks to their varied terrain, from gentle valley paths to challenging gritstone ridges. Fittingly, the students were treated to excellent weather throughout, making for perfect conditions to enjoy the area's rolling hills, dry-stone walls, and far-reaching views.

The expedition was expertly organised and delivered by Sam Sykes Ltd, widely regarded as one of the leading providers of expedition experiences in the UK. The company's Expedition Manager, Greg Sykes (no relation to the company's founder), led his team of instructors superbly throughout the three days, ensuring every group was well supported, safe, and given the guidance they needed to thrive.

Day One: Training Day

Students arrived at Newfold campsite ready to begin, meeting their dedicated instructors and settling into their groups. The day was packed with essential campcraft training, covering everything from pitching tents to map and compass skills, before heading out on a guided walk to put their new knowledge into practice. The evening session focused on route planning, grid referencing, and writing route cards, alongside discussions on effective rucksack packing and each group's team goals for the days ahead. Students also began planning their expedition presentations — a task on an outdoor-themed topic of their choosing, to be delivered at the very end of the trip.

Days Two and Three: Assessment

With training complete, students set off on their planned circular routes, applying the skills they had learned under the remote supervision of their instructors. Each day brought new challenges and learning opportunities, with instructors on hand to run through emergency procedures and first aid before departure, and to help groups reflect on their progress each evening. By the final afternoon, all groups had returned to camp for kit return, a full debrief, and the presentations they had prepared throughout the week.

Mr Price, Assistant Headteacher at Stretford Grammar School, praised the students for their hard work and determination throughout the expedition:

"I am incredibly proud of our Year 9 students. They showed fantastic resilience, teamwork, and determination across the three days, pushing themselves out of their comfort zones and rising to every challenge. It was wonderful to see them grow in confidence as the expedition progressed, and their achievement in completing the routes and delivering their presentations is a real credit to them."

The school would also like to extend its thanks to the Stretford staff who gave up their time to support the trip: Mr Whiting, Mrs Lea, and Miss Baker, whose assistance throughout the expedition was greatly appreciated.
