Choosing the right subjects for GCSE is an important milestone in every student’s academic journey. At Stretford Grammar School, we are committed to providing the best guidance and support to ensure students make informed decisions about their future. This page provides key information about the Year 9 Options process, subject choices, and resources available to help students and parents navigate this important stage.
Year 9 Options Evening
Our Year 9 Options Evening is designed to give students and parents a comprehensive understanding of the subjects available for GCSE, the process of selecting options, and the potential pathways for further education and careers. The evening will include:
- A presentation from senior staff outlining the options process and key dates
- Subject-specific talks by Curriculum Leaders and the opportunities to ask questions about course content and expectations
- Guidance on balancing subject choices to ensure a broad and balanced curriculum
The Year 9 Options Evening will take place on: Wednesday 12th February 2025.
Deadline for submission of Options choices: Monday 24th February 2025.
The Options Process
Students will be asked to choose their GCSE subjects during the spring term. The process includes:
- Exploring Subjects: Students should research different subjects, speak to teachers, and consider their interests and strengths.
- Attending Options Evening: This event provides key information and an opportunity to ask questions.
- Consulting with Staff: Tutors and subject teachers are available to discuss potential choices.
- PSHCE Lesson: Students will be guided through the Options process through PSHCE lessons and will practice selecting subject combinations.
- Submitting Choices: Students will complete their Options choices via online submission by the deadline set by the school.
Available GCSE Subjects
At Stretford Grammar School, students will study a combination of core subjects and optional subjects.
Core Subjects (Compulsory for All Students):
- English Language
- English Literature
- Mathematics
- Science (Combined or Triple Science)
- Religious Studies
- Physical Education (non-examined)
- Personal, Social, Health & Citizenship Education (PSHCE)
Optional Subjects:
Students will choose additional subjects from a wide range of disciplines, including:
- Art & Design
- Business
- Computer Science
- Design Technology
- Drama
- Food Preparation and Nutrition
- French
- Geography
- History
- Music
- Physical Education (Examined)
- Spanish
- Triple Science (counts as one choice)
Important Considerations:
- Some subjects may have prerequisites or recommended skills.
