Relatioships and Sex Education at Stretford Grammar School is an integral element of the PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education) curriculum and aims to give students and young people the information they need to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds.  It will enable them to know what a healthy relationship looks like and what makes a good friend, a good colleague and a successful marriage or other type of committed relationship.  It also covers sexual health, developing intimate relationships and resisting pressure to take relationships further.  It develops an understanding of what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in relationships and the positive impact that a healthy relationship can have on mental well-being.

Withdrawal from Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Parents and carers have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of the sex education elements of Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). There is no right to withdraw from Relationships Education, Health Education or the National Curriculum Science content.

From three terms before the student turns 16 years old, a student can choose to opt back into sex education even if their parent has requested withdrawal.

If a parent or carer wishes to request withdrawal, they should submit a written request to the Headteacher. Following receipt of the request, the Headteacher will arrange a discussion with the parent or carer to ensure they have a clear understanding of the curriculum, the educational purpose of RSE, and the implications of withdrawal.

The school believes that high-quality RSE provides young people with important knowledge and skills that support their health, wellbeing, safety and future relationships. We therefore encourage parents and carers to discuss any concerns with us before making a final decision.

Where a student is withdrawn from the non-statutory sex education elements of RSE, the school will provide appropriate supervised educational activities for the duration of the lessons.
